Unused Files

Inside the DATA folder of the game, we can found two unused files from the game:

  • TJPC_STR_RU.utx
A full Russian translation of the game that wasn't implemented at the final. However, the game's font doesn't contain Cyrillic characters.
  • TJfont_f.ttf
An alternative font for the game that is pretty similar to the used font in TJFONT.ttf. Surprisingly, it has a later modification date than the used font.

Unused Text

In the executable, we can find the string HELLO WORLD at 0x000559AC. Strings for the debug mode from the N64 version are still present in this version, as are the early names for the stages.

Revisional Differences

The Windows port is nearly identical to the N64 version, which has the same textures, models, etc. There are a couple of differences, though. The HUD has a different font for menus and time, the music is removed even though the music option is not removed, which makes it useless. Icons for characters now have shadows, and now character names appear on the health bar. Nibbles/Tuffy and Butch also had their expressions removed from the game.

Tom and Jerry in Fists of Furry is a fightingvideo game for the Nintendo 64 and Microsoft Windows that was published by NewKidCo (Ubi Soft in PAL region) and developed by VIS Interactive.[1][2]

Gameplay[edit]

Tom and Jerry in Fist of Furry features over 8 levels which each contain themes like the kitchen from the cartoon and a boxing ring.[3] Players interact with the environment in this game (i.e. usable objects like chairs, pool cues and bombs are scattered around each level)[4] and there is a lot of slapstick like gameplay involved.[5][6] Each of the game's eight characters have their own unique attacks.[5] Powerups are also found throughout the game such as a powerup which makes the player invincible to items (but not to punches or the stage hazards), or a green gas powerup which can contaminate a touched opponent.[5]

Besides Tom and Jerry, the game contains other characters from the television series such as Butch Cat, Duckling (Quacker), Nibbles (Tuffy) and Spike and Tyke.[1][6]

Reception[edit]

Ryan Davis of GameSpot called Tom and Jerry in Fists of Fury challenging but also accessible to younger players.[7] Davis praised the game's controls but he also criticized the game's difficulty balance.[7]

Until you reach your goal-zone, anything is possible. Use a variety of fencing maneuvers while armed - lunges, parries, and even dirty tricks like throwing your sword. If swordless, press forward with punches, sweep kicks, dive kicks, rolls, and wall jumps. The combat arena stretches in both directions, although besting an opponent only gains you ground. Download Matches aren’t won or lost with a single kill, but with a series of kills granting you right-of-way to run/fight/flee to your own goal-zone.Each arena holds different strategic formations and chokepoints to use to your advantage. IRL yelling and excitement may occur, in this ultimate two-player showdown of fast-paced fencing and melee attacks.Beware, advantages in Nidhogg are often fleeting, as new opponents continually spawn in your way.

N64 Magazine criticized Tom and Jerry in Fists of Furry as a whole in particular due to the lack of special attacks and mundane attacks that are in the game.[4] They did however write that the characters were not drawn that bad and that the locations in the game from the cartoons were a plus.[4]

Tom and jerry games

Super k.o boxing 2. Nintendo Power gave the game an 8.3 rating and said it was the best 3D Nintendo 64 fighting game.[8] In particular, Nintendo Power cited the multiplayer elements, interactive fighting environments, and precision controls as reasons for the positive rating.[8]

Sequel[edit]

In 2002, Tom and Jerry in War of the Whiskers was released for the PlayStation 2, GameCube and Xbox (though the latter two were North American exclusives). It was the only NewKidCo game ever released to receive a T rating.
