May 14, 2019 Blizzard has officially announced the WoW Classic release date.

Warcraft 3 Reforged wasn't ready for its January 28th release date, but that didn't stop Blizzard from releasing it. Gamers who didn’t purchase the game, but owned the original Warcraft III. Blizzard's remake of the classic RTS is out early next year.

Blizzard has just dumped a whole lot of World of Warcraft Classic information on us, including – at last – a proper release date. The vague ‘summer 2019’ that we heard back at BlizzCon last year is now officially August 27, just ahead of the game’s 15th anniversary. As previously announced, Classic will be included as part of a standard WoW subscription.

Sword io game. At a presentation to members of the press earlier this month, executive producer John High said that “This is our love letter to our fans, to our players, to our community. This is something that they have asked for. This is something that they convinced us is the right thing to do for our players.”

If you want to claim the name you used back in the day, Hight says there will be a sign-up period a “couple weeks” ahead of launch that will allow you to claim up to three names. A closed beta is set to begin tomorrow – sign-ups are available on the official site, and a series of stress tests will follow.

WoW Classic is built from the modern client, with features stripped back and removed to match the original 1.12 patch. Post-launch, additional content – from Blackwing Lair to Naxxramas – will roll out in phases in an effort to preserve the original power curve.

If you’re of a mind to spend a whole lot more money on your WoW Classic experience, you can opt for a new collector’s addition. It’ll feature bonus mounts – Alabaster Stormtalon for the Alliance, and Alabaster Thunderwing for the Horde. You’ll also get a large, lovely Ragnaros statue to stand guard over your desk.

The WoW Classic announcement back in 2017 had been a long time coming, and we’ve still got a handful of months before the final release. But at last, an official way to get into vanilla servers is upon us.

Blizzard has announced that World of Warcraft Classic will be released on August 27, 2019.

The recreation of the legendary MMO’s “Pre-expansion experience” will be made available to World of Warcraft subscribers for free, as part of the game’s 15th Anniversary celebrations. Blizzard said that: “Current subscribers can opt into an invite-only closed beta test, scheduled to begin May 15.”

“With World of Warcraft Classic, Blizzard has rebuilt the original WoW in its most polished and complete state—as it was at the time of the “Drums of War” update (patch 1.12.0), originally released August 22, 2006. Included for all subscribers at no additional cost, World of Warcraft Classic gives players the opportunity to reexperience together the moments that came to define early WoW, like 40-player raids on Molten Core; days-long PvP battles at Tarren Mill; and the grand, server-wide effort to open the gates of Ahn’Qiraj.”

Blizzard President, J Allen Brack reminisced: “Building and launching World of Warcraft back in 2004 was immensely challenging. A tornado literally tore the roof off one of the game’s data centers during the early days of testing—but Blizzard was fortunate to have hundreds, and then thousands, and then millions of people around the world cheering our developers on. Azeroth has always been a wondrous and deadly place, and it was especially so at the time of WoW’s launch, when everyone was discovering its vistas and exploring its dungeons for the first time—all while helping and supporting the company as everyone here worked through the many technical struggles of hosting a game of this size.”

Blizzard also announced the World of Warcraft 15th Anniversary Collector’s Edition, set for release on October 8, which can be pre-ordered from the official store page. And it added: “Later this year, Blizzard will be rolling out a series of in-game activities in World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth in celebration of the game’s 15th anniversary, culminating in a 25-player raid (accessible through Raid Finder) that will pit players against some of the most iconic bosses from throughout the games history. Players who make it through this epic trial will earn the Obsidian Worldbreaker mount, designed to evoke the terrible visage of the ancient Dragon Aspect Deathwing the Destroyer.”
